On September 26, 2023, Instituto Superior Técnico (University of Lisbon) welcomed a distinguished delegation from the East China Universtiy of Science and Technology (ECUST) a top university based in Shanghai, China.

This visit holds great promise as we work towards strengthening our academic ties and forging new horizons of collaboration between our institutions.
The primary objectives of this visit are:
*Enhancing Academic Cooperation and explore opportunities for collaboration in various fields, including research, student programs, and faculty exchanges.
*Facilitate the exchange of knowledge and expertise between our faculties and academics, fostering a culture of international learning and innovation.

This visit also serves as a platform to brainstorm and discuss new initiatives that can benefit both institutions, expanding our reach and impact in the academic world. As a significant outcome of this visit, we are excited to announce that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed between Universidade de Lisboa and East China University of Science and Technology. This MoU represents the first step towards a specific partnership between Instituto Superior Técnico and ECUST in the fields of Engineering, Science, and Technology. This focused collaboration is poised to yield groundbreaking advancements in these areas, fostering innovation and driving progress on a global scale.

We are confident that this visit will strengthen the bonds between our universities and pave the way for a brighter future of academic excellence, research advancements, and cultural exchange.

We are thrilled to announce a momentous occasion as we welcome our colleagues from the University of Shanghai to the heart of Lisbon at the Instituto Superior Técnico and at the Rectory of ULisboa! On September 25, 2023, representatives from both universities engaged in productive discussions. This visit marks a significant milestone in the enduring partnership between the University of Lisbon (ULisboa) and Shanghai University (SHU). 

In September 2021, top representatives from both institutions officially inked an agreement that laid the foundation for the ULisboa School, Shanghai University.  This collaboration was swiftly recognized and endorsed by the authorities in both Portugal and China, a testament to its strength and potential.

Fast forward to 2022, the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES) in Portugal granted accreditation to the study cycles, reinforcing the commitment to excellence.  Subsequently, the Chinese Ministry of Education gave its stamp of approval, validating this groundbreaking partnership.

In its inaugural phase, the ULisboa School at SHU is offering a range of bachelor’s and master’s degree programs primarily focused on the field of engineering.

Bachelor’s degrees include:

• Electrical and Computer Engineering
• Civil Engineering
• Environmental Engineering.

Master’s degrees encompass:

• Electrical and Computer Engineering
• Civil Engineering
• Environmental Engineering.

These programs represent a remarkable collaboration between Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) at ULisboa and SHU.

Electrical and Computer Engineering and Civil Engineering programs are spearheaded by IST. Environmental Engineering programs are jointly offered by IST Técnico Lisboa (IST), the School of Agriculture (ISA), and the Faculty of Sciences (FC). This partnership also extends its reach to institutions like the Lisbon School of Economics & Management (ISEG) and the School of Arts and Humanities (FL).

But that’s not all! In addition to bachelor’s and master’s programs, this partnership will open up exciting avenues for doctoral collaboration by linking existing doctoral programs at both ULisboa and SHU. The scope of cooperation also extends to cutting-edge research initiatives.

The ULisboa School of Shanghai University finds its home on the picturesque SHU campus, where the application and enrollment procedures take place. It’s a hub of innovation, culture, and academic excellence.

New project launches to accelerate the future potential of Higher Education institutions…

Instituto Superior Técnico is delighted to be part of the new research and innovation project: Accelerate Future HEI.

Hosted by the lead partner, University Industry Innovation Network (UIIN), the ambitious project brings together 12 European partners to develop and implement acceleration services, but also to provide key learnings and policy recommendations to support the acceleration of entrepreneurial and innovative HEIs across Europe.

The project intends to provide benefits beyond its life, through expert coaching, training, and network peer learning.

Accelerate Future HEI is funded under the Horizon Europe programme, the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation.
