The MIR Master, innovatively combines Robotics and Artificial Intelligence in the context of advancing marine and maritime science and their technological applications. MIR Master programme aims at building the capacity of future engineers to enable advancements in the development and operation of new robotics systems with far-reaching impact on techniques necessary for ocean exploration and exploitation.
The challenges that lie ahead can only be met by bringing together fast-paced developments in robotics and AI methods with a view to sustained autonomy and on-line decision making in the unforgiving marine environment. The MIR Master’s is designed to provide training in state-of-the-art applied robotics targeted at enhancing the efficiency, health, safety and environmental performance of the offshore industry, maritime operations, and marine science studies.
A MIR Graduate upon completion of the programme will have a deepened understanding of marine processes and challenges in order to develop robots that will interact in-and-with it, as well as develop technological solutions to mitigate and adapt to future environmental challenges (such as pollution, climate change impacts, etc.)
MIR students can specialize in one of the 3 study tracks :
- Safe autonomous subsea operations;
- Cooperative marine robotics for scientific and commercial applications; or
- Applied robotics for underwater intervention missions.
About 20 Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree scholarships will be available per year over a period of four years (2020 – 2023) on a competitive basis.

GroundwatCH – Joint Master Programme in Groundwater and Global Change – Impacts and Adaptation

GroundwatCH is a Joint Master funded by the ERASMUS+ programme and provided by an international Consortium of three Universities (IST Lisboa, Portugal; IHE Delft, The Netherlands; TU Dresden, Germany) and having several Public Institutions and private companies as partners, with large experience on groundwater hydrogeology. About 20 Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree scholarships will be available per year over a period of four years (2019 – 2022) on a competitive basis. There are two types of scholarships, depending on whether your country of residence is a partner or programme country.
As the largest liquid freshwater reservoir on earth, groundwater has both a huge environmental and economic value, and will be an essential resource for adaptation to climate change and reduction of socio-economic vulnerability, particularly in regions where freshwater availability is highly variable and frequently limited. Several factors foster the need for a more comprehensive and multidisciplinary educational groundwater programme.
The programme is organized around the following thematic areas: (1) Hydrogeology; (2) Groundwater Data Collection, Interpretation and Modelling; (3) Climate Processes and Modelling; (4) Integrated River Basin and Water Resource Management; (5) Groundwater and Environmental Impacts; (6) Groundwater, Society and Policies; and (7) Groundwater, Climate and Global Change Impacts and Adaptation. The students start the academic year in September at IST in Lisbon, where during the first semester they receive courses addressing core competences in Thematic Areas 1-6, totaling 30 ECTS. In March of the following year, the students will move to UNESCO-IHE in Delft, where they acquire 30 ECTS in the second semester, taking advanced courses within Thematic Areas 2 and 4-7. Following conclusion of the second semester and the summer break, the students then move to the Technical University of Dresden, where they study during the third semester, obtaining advanced training (30 ECTS) in Thematic Areas 3 and 7, through compulsory teaching modules in climate modelling and groundwater-soil-land-climate feedback mechanisms, as well as a study project. Here the students will also have a number of optional modules from which they can choose two, specializing in a certain direction, depending on their thesis subject.

SEED – Simulation in Engineering and Entrepreneurship Development
The Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate SEED provides in-depth training in the development and implementation of new state-of-the-art computational techniques for the modelling and solution of cutting-edge engineering problems in industry.
SEED program aims to meet industry current needs, where early product prototyping and development is now entirely carried out through numerical modelling, prior to physical experimentation of a few selected designs. The complexities of such models require new computational approaches, which are the main focus of SEED research activities. As a result, SEED candidates aim to cover important areas in engineering which include:
- Biomedical engineering: vascular system, respiratory system, tissue engineering.
- Civil engineering: soil stability, foundations, earthquake engineering, durability.
- Aerospace engineering: composite materials, turbulence analysis, aerodynamics.
- Environmental engineering: noise analysis, pollution analysis, risk management.
Students will be also taught to develop core entrepreneurial skills to successfully move ideas into commercial practice through a series of transversal entrepreneurship modules, as part of their training. Doctoral students will be immersed in an innovation environment through interaction with newly established R&D spin-offs hosted within specialist incubator units.

The Erasmus Mundus PhD programme SELECT+ will provide participants the opportunity to produce, test and put energy innovations to the market in an international setting of highly respected universities and business schools.
The SELECT+ (Environomical pathways for future energy services) is a four-year Doctoral programme, with its main goal to identify, test, implement and commercialize highly efficient energy technologies. This programme combines the in-depth fundamental research that is required by academia with the development of innovations that have market potential. With a consortium of 8 core Universities, 6 associated Universities, 4 core Industries and 6 associated Industries, the SELECT+ programme will offer the way to reconcile these two perspectives through multi-disciplinary approaches in which the students work in collaboration with industries. Energy problems are typically multi-disciplinarial not only in the sense that different science and engineering disciplines are necessary but also that the social and management sciences (e.g. regarding business strategies) will have to play a critical role. This Doctoral programme puts equal emphasis to the social, economic, managerial as well as cultural aspects to the development of our PhD candidates.
EMJD-DC – An International joint Doctoral School in Distributed Computing

EMJD-DC intends to become a permanent reference model for international doctoral studies in Distributed System and beyond. Students carry out their research work over up to four years in two universities from different countries, with additional mobility to industry in most projects. Joint training schools will cover both scientific topics and transferable skills, such as project and scientific management, communication, innovation techniques. EMJD-DC will initially award double degrees.

IDS-FunMat is an International Doctoral Programme in Functional Materials funded by the ERASMUS MUNDUS Programme of the European Union.
Our school offers scholarships for PhD projects in Functional Materials Science, carried out in co-supervision between universities from two different countries (see list of partners). In most projects an industry partner is also involved. The PhD candidates must spend at least 6 months in each university.
The European Union finances each year a number of ERASMUS MUNDUS PhD scholarships in our school, and in addition we have PhD projects funded by other sources.
euSYSBIO – European Master in Systems Biology (concluded)

The Erasmus Mundus master’s programme in Systems Biology (euSYSBIO) is a cooperation between KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden (KTH), Instituto Superior Técnico in Portugal (IST) and Aalto University in Finland. It is a two-year Master’s programme including compulsory mobility for the students. Students enter at KTH or Aalto University and continue in the second year at one of the other two institutions.
The euSYSBIO programme offers education of high international standard as well as cultural experience from two different European countries and a double degree from two universities.
EMDC – European Master in Distributed Computing (concluded)
