Horizon 2020 is the EU Programme Framework for Investigation and Innovation from 2014 till 2020, with a €77 billion euros budget. Horizon 2020 is the financial instrument supporting cofinanced innovation, research and demonstration projects. Proposals submitted for the open calls are accessed in a competitive and independent evaluation process. Horizon 2020 is constructed under 3 main pillars:
- Pillar I – Scientific Excellence (around 32% of the total budget) including the Marie Sklodowska Curie actions and the Joint Doctorates, that base their frame in the triple i cooperation: international, intersectorl (academic and non academic actors) and interdisciplinary. These programmes finance scholarships to experienced and beginner investigators, offering them a double degree.;
- Pillar II – Industrial Leadership (corresponding to 22% of the budget);
- Pillar III – Societal Challenges (with around 39% of the total budget).
