How to request a NIF (Tax Identification Number)?

The International Admissions Office provides support to Técnico Lisboa’s international community in the process of obtaining a NIF (Tax Identification Number), an essential document for various activities in Portugal.

Therefore, any student, scholarship holder, researcher or other academic member can request the NIF upon arrival in Portugal. Please review the list of required documents according to your status:

For EU/EEA/Swiss Citizens:

  • Passport or Identity Card (ID);
  • EU Citizen Registration;
  • Proof of residence in Portugal;
  • Proof of residence in your home country (matching the passport).

For Non-EU/EEA/Swiss Citizens:

  • Passport;
  • Valid visa (except Schengen Visa);
  • Proof of residence in Portugal;
  • Proof of residence in your home country (matching the passport).

Please bring copies of the mentioned documents and visit the International Admissions Office. After receiving and reviewing all the documents, we will contact the claimants via email to schedule an appointment to complete the process with the Tax and Customs Authority (AT).

IMPORTANT:

  • The NIF can only be requested after arriving in the country, once you have official residence in Portugal, proven by a valid document;
  • The documents submitted to the International Admissions Office must be copies of the originals. For the appointment with the Tax and Customs Authority (AT), claimants must present the original documents;
  • Please note that any missing documents will prevent the NIF request from being processed.
For more information about other procedures, please contact the International Admissions Office directly.
