ATHENS Programme

The ATHENS Programme aims to provide intensive specialization courses, given at each member institution during one or two defined periods (‘Sessions’) of the academic year, enabling students to attend one of the courses offered by the network universities for 7 days.

Sessions take place twice a year, in March and November.

The next session of the program will take place from November 15 to 22, 2025, and the application period will run from September 11 to 24, 2025. The list of courses is available here.

Application

Please check the programme rules (125K) and APPLICATION GUIDELINES (125KB)

Applications should be submitted at the ATHENS application webpage and by filling in the NMPI Application Form.

The application consists of two stages:

The Registration Form must be signed and submitted through the NMPI application form. It must not be sent by email!

Only applications with a valid registration on the ATHENS platform and submission of the NMPI application form will be considered.

Courses

The ATHENS week permits participants from different institutions to take short courses of a high scientific level and to mix with students of different nationalities and backgrounds. Around 60 courses are offered at each ATHENS session, covering a wide range of thematic, from engineering to social sciences. The aim is to give students a brief immersion in another European education system.

It is possible to consult all the information, including the number of credits for the courses, on the ATHENS Programme platform.

Each course has a minimum requirement regarding the year of completion for participation. Therefore, the student must consider the number of years of studies completed.

The courses are free of charge. However, accommodation, meals, and European Dimension Activities are the responsibility of the participants. Travel expenses are not included in the estimate.

Grant Support

ATHENS courses are not funded, with the exception of ATHENS BIP courses. After the evaluation of applications, participants in the ATHENS BIP courses will be contacted and informed about the procedures to follow.

Cultural Activities

European Dimension Activities are organized to complement the course. The purpose is to permit ATHENS students to better know the course organizing institution,  as well as the European city where the course is held. Of special importance is the opportunity to mix with students of different nationalities and backgrounds during these activities.

Cultural activities are an integral part of an ATHENS session and participation is compulsory.

Travel

Travel costs, by bus, train or flight from one institution to another vary tremendously.

Housing

At most institutions, housing is the responsibility of the student. Those that are able to offer university accommodation will inform students of this once they have been accepted into the programme.
