Erasmus+ Programme (Studies)
The Erasmus+ Programme is the most important student exchange program in the European Union, and since its launch, more than one million students have enjoyed the experience of studying in another country. This programme involves thousands of higher education institutions from different countries.
It is a programme that, despite having a large part of its action in higher education’s dimension, it extends to social and cultural aspects that provide a space for openness, tolerance and intercultural dialogue.
Duration
This programme allows mobility of a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 12 months at a partner University per cycle of studies.
List of Parners Universities
The list of partner universities to be considered for the different application periods will always be published on the application page, so that you can see the available offers before making your application. In the lists there will be also available the link to the partner university’s page.
Conditions and Application Deadlines
Applications for study mobility within the scope of the Erasmus+ Programme take place twice a year, in periods to be designated annually, and information on mobility taking place in the academic year 2024/25 can be consulted here.
The two application phases are mentioned here (PDF 246KB) , and in an overview are defined as follows:
- January Applications – for all students in the 2nd cycle who wish to undertake an international mobility study in the 1st semester or for the whole academic year.
- September Application – for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd cycle students who meet the eligibility criteria listed here (PDF 246KB) who wish to undertake an international mobility study in 2nd semester of the current academic year.
After Selection
About two weeks after the end of the applications, students will know the results of their applications. After the publication of the results, students will have three service days, counting upon the publication of the results, to change their destination to the available places within their course, only in duly justified cases. For this to happen they will have to go and talk to the respective Mobility Coordinator to consult the existing vacancies and then it will be the Mobility Coordinator who will communicate the change of destination to the Erasmus Team. The change will be made if it is still within the deadline of the selected school. Afterward, the NMPI will contact the students so that they can proceed with the registration in the host universities and fill in the necessary documentation to receive the Erasmus+ grant from the University of Lisbon.
The students will receive an email sent by the Erasmus team with the procedures to apply to the university where they will be placed. The students will receive this email according to the deadline of the partner school, so the students will not receive all the emails at the same time.
Scholarships
When applying to an Erasmus+ Studies mobility, the student is automatically applying for the Erasmus+ Scholarship, which will monthly complement the expenses incurred during the mobility. After the results are released and the completion of the application to the partner university, NMPI will contact the selected students in order to share with them the procedures for applying for the scholarship.
The values to be attributed vary depending on the destination and may undergo slight changes in different periods of mobility; however, the values shared below, from the academic year of 2024/25, can be used as a reference:
450€ | GROUP 1
Programme Countries with high living costs (Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Norway and Sweden, Switzerland) |
400€ | GROUP 2
Programme Countries with medium living costs (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Netherlands and Portugal) |
350€ | GROUP 3

Procedures After Mobility
After the end of the mobility, the student must send to the NMPI his/her Declaration of Stay signed and stamped with the start and end dates of the mobility, as well as the Transcript of Records (ToR) with his/her final grades. The Transcript of Records has to be sent to the Erasmus Team (erasmus@tecnico.ulisboa.pt) by the Receiving University.
After the reception of the ToR, the Final Study Plan will be sent so that the final grades of the equivalences made during the mobility can be converted by the Mobility Coordinator.
The Final Study Plan and the Transcript of Records should be sent by your Mobility Coordinator to the NMPI Erasmus team that will then send it to the Degree Programme Office, which, by itself, will upload the final grades in Fénix.
You can consult the contacts of the Mobility Coordinators here.
Frequently Asked Questions…
Because last year many colleges canceled Erasmus and there is an excess demand for Erasmus next year, there will be some increase in vacancies?
No, the number of vacancies is fixed and per school year, and is stipulated for the entire duration of the agreement.
I would like to know how it works in case we eventually fall behind in some subject during the semester when we go on Erasmus or if we want to make some improvements, for example, how it works.
The students enroll in fênix and may take the subject at a distance or, if they have not been evaluated, they may include this overdue subject in the equivalence plan before going on mobility, it may be 1 subject per semester up to a maximum of 2, if it is 1 year.
How do I know which subjects have/get equivalence to subjects at IST?
You choose the subjects on the university’s website and then propose a study plan to the mobility coordinator who will tell you whether you agree or not.
There are no pre-defined plans, each student makes his or her own according to the subjects they want to take, and that is an added value to their CV.
The average to apply for Erasmus is counted until which semester?
The average that counts will be the average of all the subjects that are posted by the closing of the application.
Do I have to have chosen the master’s degree before I apply?
Yes, because the universities/vacancies are associated with IST’s various Master’s degrees.
What happens to those who at the time of the 1st application period is in a master’s program and then switch to another master’s program?
In that case, they should only apply for mobility in the 2nd semester, when they will already be in the new master’s degree, in the application period of September/October.
How do we know if the course units chosen have equivalences at IST? How are the equivalences processed?
The equivalences are always made based on 30 ects (30 ects if it’s 1 semester, 60 ects if it’s 1 year) if you don’t do them all, you will have the equivalences corresponding to the ects you do.
The equivalences are made with your mobility coordinator who is the one who establishes with you the plan of equivalences and also counts all the changes that may happen during your mobility period.
Existing Agreements?
Técnico has more than one hundred agreements with several universities at European level. The Erasmus+ places are fixed and divided by study areas, which correspond to the different courses existing at Técnico. The list of agreements for mobility will be available in the page where the application is made.
