MOOC Técnico: Women in STEM – a MOOC for Educators

Monday, September 5th, 2022

Gender stereotypes and under-representation of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) affect the way girls and young women perceive themselves, and it is one of the reasons for their limited presence in the STEM field. Believing that MOOC and gender-balanced educational content in general can be part of the solution, in this MOOC we are going to listen to the voices of people who work for a more inclusive environment in the STEM field.

We present a toolkit created in the framework of FOSTWOM Erasmus+ project (http://fostwom.eu/) to develop MOOCs according to a gender conscious perspective with a particular focus on: Content and storytelling to be used, gender-aware language, gender-aware use of images and visual materials.

The aim is to offer a practical tool to all people willing to create educational content in a gender-conscious perspective.

This MOOC is provided by MOOC Técnico, designed in collaboration with Politecnico di Milano and developed in the framework of the FOSTWOM project.

Access to materials:

You can access the course absolutely free of charge and completely online.

Course materials will remain available to all enrolled users after the end of the current edition, so they can return to content later. All videos included in the MOOC are provided with subtitles both in English and Portuguese.

Course start date: September 12, 2022
Course end date: January 1, 2023

Follow-up: 3rd FOSTWOM training “Flipped-classroom with gender inclusive STEM MOOCs”

Friday, July 8th, 2022

The third and last training taught in the scope of the European Erasmus+ project FOSTWOM – “Fostering Women to STEM MOOCs” – was held from 20 to 22 June 2022, at Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon Campus, under the theme of “Flipped-classroom with gender inclusive STEM MOOCs”. This training was the responsibility of Professor Ana Moura Santos, Coordinator of the MOOC Técnico and Faculty member at the Department of Mathematics, together with her collaborators Paola Corti and Valeria Baudo (METID- Politecnico di Milano), Luis Felipe Costa (Instituto Superior Técnico), Domenico Brunetto (Politecnico di Milano), Erika Rossner and Charlotta Nilsson (KTH Royal Institute of Technology) during the four training sessions.

The participants, from the partner institutions of the FOSTWOM project – Universitat Politècnica de València, Instituto Superior Técnico, Conservatoire National Des Arts et Métiers, METID Politecnico di Milano and KTH Royal Institute of Technology – discussed different strategies of using MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) as tools to support inclusive approaches and Flipped-classroom methodologies. The main objective of the training, aligned with that of the FOSTWOM project, is to raise awareness of inclusion and gender equality issues in STEM education.

The training was divided into 4 sub-modules (2 hours each) with the following contents:

1. Video design for MOOC courses focusing on gender equality: video analysis from the point of view of narrative/content, language and images, using the FOSTWOM Toolkit. Practice of storyboard design for videos with STEM contents, using the list of good practices suggested in the FOSTWOM Toolkit.

2. Presentation of “Heroine’s Learning Journey” as a motivational contribution to support the online activities of a MOOC. Creation of two Personas to experience afterwards the “Heroine’s Learning Journey” videos.

3. Analysis of a Flipped-classroom planning experience applied to Mathematics contents in the Architecture course at Politecnico di Milano (2019). Discussion and validation of the planning of a Flipped-classroom strategy for STEM classes using open online contents, MOOC or others.

4. Validation of active teaching strategies, Active Learning, using the COPUS protocol for observation of STEM classes. Analysis of a possible adaptation of the COPUS protocol from a gender balance perspective. Collective comment on strategies for the applicability of this new proposed protocol for class observation.

MOOC Técnico – Machine learning, Maths & Ethics: Hands-on 2021

Friday, November 26th, 2021

The MOOC “Machine learning, Maths & Ethics: Hands-on” is an open online course, free of charge, which runs in self-paced mode.

This hands-on course teaches you about the foundations of Machine Learning in an intuitive way. With a heavy focus on exercises and examples, this course allows you to develop practical machine learning skills, while stimulating your critical thinking on the ethics of machine learning models. Although the fields of computer science, artificial intelligence and machine learning are changing the world, the truth is that girls and women are still underrepresented in these fields. Thus, we expect this MOOC to be a meaningful learning opportunity to empower young people, especially young women to follow these areas of expertise. You can find several interviews throughout the course with female experts, students and professionals, researching and working in those fields.

This course was developed within the Erasmus+ FOSTWOM project, which aims to promote full and equal access for young women in STEM.

Target audience: Young people, especially young women, curious to know how algorithms work, which models can be built with the help of machine learning, their advantages and limitations.

Course start date: 1st December 2021
Course end date: 1st March 2022
Application start date: 22nd November

FOSTWOM | Multiplier Event “Fostering Women into STEM MOOCs: An Open Toolkit for Gender-Balance Design”

Wednesday, September 8th, 2021

We are pleased to announce the “Fostering Women into STEM MOOCs: An Open Toolkit for Gender-Balance Design” Multiplier Event, in the framework of CC Global Summit 2021, that will be held virtually on Thursday, September 23, from 13h30 to 14h30.

FOSTWOM is an EU-funded ERASMUS+ project which aims at developing content and tools to support gender-balanced STEM MOOCs. FOSTWOM Toolkit promotes gender-equality training on the job and can help to recognize situations of gender inequality soon enough to correct them or implement alternative solutions. The aim of this toolkit is to support STEM (and not only STEM) content experts, MOOC instructional designers, graphic and video designers during the design and implementation phase of their producing work.

The September event will be dedicated to the presentation of the project “FOSTWOM – Fostering Women to STEM MOOCs”, that results from a consortium between Técnico Lisboa (ULisboa) and Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), Conservatoire National Des Arts et Métiers (CNAM), METID Politecnico di Milano (METID), KTH Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Colégio Amor de Deus (CAD) and I.I.S Benedetto Castelli (I.I.S.Castelli).

We will introduce the FOSTWOM toolkit and give practical examples of its use in designing MOOCs. We aim to collect participants’ feedback, providing them with good practices, and inviting them to apply the toolkit checklist themselves. The toolkit will be released under a CC BY license.

Target participants are:

– MOOC managers and Educational community members

– Technical staff members from Higher Educational institutions involved in MOOCs

– Teachers from Higher Educational institutions already involved or interested in the MOOC development from a gender-balance perspective with a special focus on STEM subjects.

Registration is free, though a Creative Commons support fee is welcomed.  Registration options here.
