The World Pendulum Alliance (WPA) Partners Meeting held at the Universidad de los Andes – Colombia and led by the professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering – Universidad de los Andes, Carlos Francisco Rodriguez Herrera, brought together 40 professors (Prof. Horácio Fernandes, Prof. João Silva e Ana Pipio from IST/Portugal), and students (Pedro Rossa from IST/Portugal) from 8 countries with the aim of bringing together ideas of scientific dissemination based on the experiment of the determination of local gravity. In addition, during the meeting, other physical phenomena that can be studied with the experiment were identified, such as: the torsional elasticity of the pendulum and the effect of tides on the variation of gravity.
The Project Coordinators Ana Pipio(NRI) e Horácio Fernandes (IPFN) informed us that the meeting and the trainings were fruitful and very important for the achievement of the planned results.

Thursday, November 4th, 2021

Instituto Superior Técnico and Gonda Multidisciplinary Brain Research Center at Bar-Ilan University, recently signed a bilateral agreement that will allow students from both institutions to obtain a double degree in neuroscience, biomedical engineering and data science. Students will have the opportunity to spend the second year at the partner university.

Subjects of study will include advanced courses in these fields at both universities. At Bar-Ilan university, emphasis will be given on issues related to neuroscience. Técnico will focus on biomedical engineering and data science. At both institutions, students will specialise in understanding and deciphering signals from the nervous system.

The applications submitted to the joint international MSc degree programme will be analysed by a selection committee composed of professors from both entities.

This bilateral agreement was the launch pad for a broader partnership involving other international institutions under the Erasmus Mundus programme, which is expected to be approved soon.

The program is multidisciplinary and accepts applicants according to the same admission requirements as for a Master’s degree at the Brain Research Center. The Multidisciplinary Center for Brain Research accepts applications from all the natural sciences, psychology and more. Acceptance will depend on the students’ success in their first-year courses.

1st dissemination events of the project Strengthening Mathematics Education – MathICs

Thursday, October 28th, 2021

The first dissemination events of the project Strengthening Mathematics Education – MathICs was held from 05 to 07 October 2021 in the Faculty of Science of Rabat, Ibn Tofail University in Kenitra and the Engineering School of Mines in Rabat. MathICs, is a project co-financed by the Erasmus+ program of the European Union (Key Action 2: Capacity Building in Higher Education), and runs for three years, until January 14, 2024.

The 1st day of this event on October 05, 2021 at the Faculty of Sciences of Rabat, were honored by the participation of Mr. Mohammed Rhachi (President of Mohammed V University of Rabat),  Mr. Mohamed Tahiri (Director of Higher Education and Pedagogical Development at the Ministry of National Education, Higher Education, Staff Training, and Scientific Research), Mr. Mohammed Regragui (Dean of Faculty of Sciences of Rabat), and Mr. Ismaïl kassou (vice president in Mohammed V University of Rabat). and the Mr. Vítor Marcelino Counsul of Portuguese Embassy in Rabat. The coordinator of the Mathic’s project, the coordinator of the ERASMUS+ office in Morocco as well as the permanent members of the project made their presentations, and Ana Pipio, Coordinator of International Relations Office, made a presentation of IST.  Professor Luis Oyonarte, the coordinator of MathICs, has given a short presentation of MathICs, its main aims and their activities. Mathematics has been identified as a “key lever for transforming STEM teaching and learning” (European Schoolnet, 2018). This is one of the messages from Professor Bennis, Moroccan coordinator of MathICs, who, during the three days of MathICs dissemination events held from 05 to 07 October 2021, demonstrated the importance of MathICs in the mathematics education system as well as the importance of using ICT to promote mathematics in Moroccan institutions. Dr. Latifa Saadaoui, the coordinator of the NEO Office in Morocco, gave a presentation that highlighted the great importance of the CBHE projects and in particular the MathICs project in the development of the education system in Morocco.

The 2nd day organized on October 06, 2021 at t the University Ibn Tofail, Professor Fahid shed light on the role and importance of MathICs dissemination strategy. He mainly showed how MathICs dissemination plan envisions dissemination not only to present the MathICs project and its results, but also to increase awareness of the use of ICTs in mathematics education in Morocco which is the main purpose of MathICs.  After, Kenitra colleagues showed us their beautiful campus.

The 3rd day was on École de Mines de Rabat, included the presentation of Professor Fouad Bennis who shared his 20 years of experience as Director of International Relations at Centrale Nantes.  and Natacha Moniz from IST made a presentation about the MathICs Project Social Media.

All the days we made Workpage workshops, to learn the administrative and financial details of the project, quality plan guidelines (Ana Pipio from IST coordinate the session) and Teacher’s training sesssion (Ana Moura Santos from IST participate by virtual).

We had also hold several comittee meetings to talk about the next steps to take in each Work Package.
