Fall-In-Age Project

Fall-in-Age – Innovative Training for Technology-based Frailty and Falls Management

Fall-in-Age Project aims at the development and implementation of an online open course for students, specialists and professionals in the area of healthcare and geriatrics. The course focuses on the application of biomechanical technologies for the assessment and treatment of frailty and reduction of the number of falls in elderly people.

“Frailty can be defined as a clinical condition in which there is an increased risk of individual vulnerability to develop adverse events such as dependence, higher Risk of Falling, and/or mortality when there is exposure to stressors”. The evaluation of the risk of falling, especially in primary healthcare, can help to avoid risks generated by falls.

Fall-In-Age training will help to increase skills on frailty and falls management from the very first step that is the evaluation of the risk of falling. Nevertheless, the aim of the training is wider. It will explore the relationship between frailty and falls in older adults including risk factors and prevention. Additionally, biomechanical aspects related to functional deterioration and active aging and functional capability surveillance will be included in the on-line course.

Fall-in-Age is coordinated by Instituto Superior Técnico/Universidade de Lisboa.

PARTNERS: Instituto Superior Técnico (IST/UL); Faculdade de Motricidade Humana (FMH/UL); Instituto de Biomecanica de Valencia (IBV);Istituto Nazionale di Riposo e Cura per Anziani (INRCA);and European General Practice Research Network (EGPRN).

IST TEAM: Mónica Oliveira, Edgar Mascarenhas, Ivo Roupa, Sérgio Gonçalves, Ana Pipio, Joana Salgueira and Miguel Tavares da Silva (coordinator)
